Why teams move from Joomla to Webflow, and what holds them back

Webflow solves what Joomla can’t: performance, control, and modern workflows. But migrations can feel risky. That’s where we come in.

Outdated interface

Joomla’s UI is clunky and unintuitive, especially for marketers used to more modern, visual platforms.

Rigid CMS structure

Content models in Joomla don’t translate easily to Webflow’s CMS, requiring careful remapping and content handling.

SEO at stake

Even a well-intentioned migration can harm rankings if not done right. Redirects, metadata, and page structure need expert handling to preserve visibility.

The process feels heavy

From content mapping to platform setup, migrations can overwhelm non-technical teams. Without the right partner, they risk delays, confusion, and missed opportunities.

How Flow Ninja makes migration effortless

Migrations don’t have to be risky, slow, or stressful. With a structured process, technical know-how, and full onboarding, we make sure your move to Webflow feels like an upgrade, not a setback.

How to Migrate Joomla to Webflow

There’s no direct way to perform Joomla to Webflow migration. Here’s a short overview of how this process works. In case you’re having trouble with the migration process, feel free to contact Flow Ninja.

  • Step 1 — Start by taking an inventory of all the content on your Joomla site. This includes articles, pages, images, and other media elements.
  • Step 2 — Export your Joomla content. Joomla allows you to export content as XML or CSV. This export file will serve as the basis for importing content into Webflow.
  • Step 3 — Ensure that you have a Webflow account and the site where you want to import the content is created.
  • Step 4 — Import your content into Webflow. In Webflow, you'll need to create CMS collections to represent the different types of content you had in Joomla (e.g., articles, blog posts, products). Define the structure of your collections, including fields for titles, content, images, and any other data. Use Joomla's CSV or XML export to input the content into your Webflow CMS collections manually. You must create new items for each article or piece of content. For articles, you'll copy and paste the content, set the title, and fill in any additional fields in Webflow.
  • Step 5 — Migrate images and media files. To do that, you'll need to upload them to Webflow's media library. You can then replace the links in your content with the URLs of the corresponding images in Webflow. Finally, if Joomla used custom fields for content, you may need to create similar custom fields in Webflow and manually transfer data.
  • Step 6 — Recreate the design from Figma. In Webflow, you'll need to recreate the layout of your Joomla site. Use Webflow's visual design tools to build the pages, set up navigation, and apply the desired styling.
  • Step 7 — Set up 301 redirects in Webflow. This is crucial for preserving SEO rankings and preventing broken links. Webflow allows you to configure redirects within the project settings.
  • Step 8 — If your Joomla site is multilingual, configure the multilingual features in Webflow. Webflow's multilingual features are different from Joomla's, so you'll need to adjust your content accordingly.
  • Step 9 — Thoroughly test your Webflow site to ensure that all content, links, and functionality are working correctly. Check for any broken links and missing content.
  • Step 10 — Optimize your Webflow site for SEO. Pay attention to metadata, keywords, alt tags for images, and other on-page SEO elements.
  • Step 11 — Once you're satisfied with the Webflow site, update your domain settings to point to Webflow and publish your site.

Keep in mind that the complexity of the migration process can vary depending on the size and complexity of your Joomla site. It's also a good idea to keep backups of your Joomla site and data throughout the migration process to avoid any data loss or other issues.

Webflow Migrations FAQ

How do I migrate from Joomla to Webflow?

Migrating from Joomla to Webflow involves rethinking your site structure, redesigning in Webflow’s visual builder, and transferring content. This can be done either manually or through custom import methods. Joomla sites often rely on older templating systems and extensions, which don’t translate directly to Webflow’s framework. If your team wants to modernize and scale without the technical headaches, we recommend booking a free migration consultation with Flow Ninja to map out the most efficient and safe path forward.

What are the common challenges when moving from Joomla to Webflow?

Joomla sites often suffer from years of patchwork solutions, such as third-party plugins, hardcoded layouts, and rigid templates. These can make clean migration tricky. Rebuilding that structure in Webflow while improving usability and content management takes strategic planning. Additionally, preserving SEO (redirects, metadata, structured data) and navigating technical complexity is essential to avoid performance drops. Flow Ninja handles all of this for you, ensuring your new site is faster, easier to manage, and future-proof.

Will I lose SEO rankings if I migrate my Joomla website to Webflow?

If handled carelessly, yes, but when done right, then no. We take care of everything from implementing 301 redirects to recreating meta tags, headers, and schema. Our SEO team ensures your new Webflow site maintains all critical ranking signals and even helps you improve long-term visibility. We also offer post-launch support to monitor search performance and fine-tune as needed.

How does Flow Ninja ensure a smooth Joomla to Webflow migration?

We begin with a full audit of your Joomla setup, including your content architecture, SEO configurations, and current design. Then, we rebuild the site in Webflow using clean, scalable components, modern design standards, and Webflow CMS for structured content. Our cross-functional team ensures every detail is carried over while giving your marketing team full editing power. Schedule a free consultation call and we’ll walk you through it.

Can Flow Ninja help with post-migration maintenance or ongoing marketing support?

Definitely. Our clients often stay with us post-migration to scale their marketing efforts. We offer Webflow development support, design enhancements, new landing page rollouts, SEO campaigns, and integration of MarTech tools. If you’ve struggled to make updates on Joomla without dev support, Flow Ninja and Webflow will be a breath of fresh air.

How is content and CMS data from Joomla transferred into Webflow’s CMS?

Joomla’s content system can be fragmented, as it can include articles, modules, custom components, and more. We evaluate your existing structure, consolidate and streamline where necessary, and recreate your content within Webflow CMS collections. This may involve manual migration or tailored scripts, but the result is a clean, flexible CMS your marketing team can manage with ease.

Will my website performance, security, and accessibility improve after switching from Joomla to Webflow?

Yes, across the board. Joomla websites often rely on aging plugins, shared hosting, and outdated markup, which slows down performance and increases security risks. Webflow provides enterprise-grade hosting, built-in security, and modern semantic code. Our team ensures your new site is fast, accessible, and compliant with all relevant guidelines (ADA, WCAG, GDPR, etc.).

How long does a typical Joomla to Webflow migration take with Flow Ninja?

Most Joomla migrations take between 4–8 weeks, depending on site complexity, number of content types, and SEO needs. During your free discovery call, we’ll assess your current setup and provide a tailored scope, timeline, and cost estimate to help you plan confidently.

What makes Webflow better than Joomla for marketing-led teams?

Joomla was built in a different era and for developers, not marketers. It requires extensions, dev resources, and backend know-how for even simple updates. Webflow gives marketers the power to build, edit, and scale campaigns visually, without relying on a developer for every landing page or content change. It’s ideal for modern marketing teams that value agility, experimentation, and control.

Are there any Joomla-specific issues that I can solve by moving to Webflow?

Joomla’s biggest pitfalls are its outdated backend UI, plugin sprawl, and complex update process. Over time, this creates performance and security issues, not to mention operational overhead for your marketing team. Webflow simplifies all of this: visual editing, streamlined CMS, no patching, no plugin conflicts. If you’re ready to escape technical debt and empower your team, Flow Ninja makes the move from Joomla seamless and strategic.
